Ancient Chinese Silk Design Collection: Visual Motifs
Ancient Chinese Silk Design Collection: Visual Motifs is an exceptionally beautiful book that explores the hidden world of traditional Chinese textile patterns and decorative art.
When we admire the treasures displayed in art museums, visit magnificent temples, or appreciate the skilled craftsmanship of folk artists, editor Yuan Xuanping observes these artworks from a professional perspective. Through ancient paintings, temple murals, religious paintings, Thangka artworks, and illustrated scenes of daily life, she discovers more than elegant lines and beautiful colors — she reveals the evolution of Chinese clothing patterns and textile decoration across thousands of years.
This book allows readers to discover the beauty of pattern art hidden within familiar works of visual culture. In the Tang dynasty painting Court Ladies Preparing Newly Woven Silk by Zhang Xuan, the shawls, robes, and skirts of each lady feature unique patterns, ranging from delicate geometric floral motifs to richly decorated lotus and scrolling vine designs. In the Five Dynasties painting The Night Revels of Han Xizai by Gu Hongzhong, even a servant standing quietly in the background wears clothing decorated with elegant circular patterns.
The book also explores the exquisite costumes depicted in the Yuan dynasty mural Audience of the Taoist Gods at the Sanqing Hall, the 136 scrolls of Ming dynasty Water-and-Land paintings from Baoning Temple, colorful Tibetan Thangka art, and traditional folk New Year paintings. These artworks together form a remarkable treasure house of historical clothing and textile patterns.
After three years of research, the editor collected more than 1,000 traditional motifs and selected 181 representative patterns to be digitally reconstructed and presented in this book. To help readers understand the origins of each design, the book includes images of the original artworks along with enlarged details for comparison.
As the editor explains, “Traditional culture is not an abstract concept. Lifestyle is an important carrier of culture, and decorative patterns are among the most representative cultural symbols of a nation.”
Because archaeological discoveries are often incomplete and historical documents rarely record decorative details, the study and restoration of textile patterns found in ancient artworks provides valuable new materials for understanding the history of Chinese textile art.
A valuable reference for anyone interested in Chinese silk, fashion history, textile design, traditional patterns, art history, and cultural heritage.
